Why I lead with Prompts and never poses:

Let’s be honest: the moment I pull out my camera at a family photoshoot, the internal parent panic usually sets in.

“Sit still.”

“Look at the camera.”

“Stop picking that up!”

If you’re heading into a family photoshoot with visions of your kids sitting or standing still smiling for an hour, I have a gentle secret for you: There's not of that here!

There is zero posing in my sessions.

Why Prompts Beat Poses Every Single Time

Traditional posing asks kids to do something they would never normally do. Kids bodies are built for movement, and the result with posing is usually stiff shoulders, forced grins, and a whole lot of frustration for everyone involved, parents included. I started KerryAnne Photography wanting to capture the real moments in your every day chaos.

I lead with prompts and games.

• Instead of “say cheese,” I’ll ask who is ticklish.

• Instead of “stand right there,” I’ll challenge the kids to a race race each other running around mum and dad whilst they watch on giggling at them.

When kids are running, laughing, tickling, and exploring, their shoulders drop. Their real personalities take over. You get the crinkly eyed giggles, the real belly laughs, and the authentic connection.

Let Kids Be Kids

Children are high energy, and beautifully chaotic. Trying to freeze that energy into a rigid box does a disservice to who they are right now.

When we let kids run around, race, collect sticks, and be themselves during a shoot, magic happens. Yes, there might be a moment where someone darts off in the wrong direction or decides a blade of grass is far more interesting than my camera lens. That is okay. That is childhood.

Your Only Job Is to Trust the Process

You don’t need to stress about whether they’re behaving. Your only job on shoot day is to let go of the expectations, lean into the fun, and trust the process.
